Built for central Alberta farm country

Farm country between Calgary and Red Deer. What an Olds roof is up against.

Olds sits about 90 km north of Calgary and 61 km south of Red Deer, in open farmland, with Sundre and the foothills to the west. That brings summer hail, wind across the fields, months of snow and, toward Sundre, forest close to homes. Here is how an Interlock® aluminum roof deals with each, and what it doesn't promise.

Hail

Alberta's costliest weather

Insurance Bureau of Canada puts hail damage in Alberta at about $6 billion over the five years to 2025. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Big enough hail can still dent metal; the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), and storm damage is a matter for your home insurance.

Wind

Wind across open fields

Around Olds the land is mostly farmland, with little between a house and the next storm front. Asphalt tabs lift and crease in gusts. Interlock panels lock on all four sides with the fasteners hidden, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Farmyards

More than one roof per property

Olds is home to Olds College of Agriculture & Technology, and the country around it is farmland and acreages. The house, garage, shop and barn can share one Interlock® profile and colour, each measured and priced on its own line.

Forest

Toward Sundre and the foothills

Sundre is a forestry town in the foothills, and homes toward the foothills often sit among trees. FireSmart Alberta recommends Class A roofing and advises against wood shakes. We can build the roof as Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the panels. No roof is fireproof.

Snow

Snow off, ice dams checked

Snow slides off aluminum, so we put snow guards on the quote wherever a slide would land on a door, deck or path. Ice dams are caused by attic heat melting snow that refreezes at the eaves. The material warranty excludes ice damming; we check insulation and ventilation with you instead.

Permits

Re-roofing in the Town of Olds

The Town of Olds requires a building permit when work goes beyond painting, decorating, re-roofing or siding, so a straight re-roof usually doesn't need one. Structural repairs can change that. Electrical permits, for solar for example, are not issued by the Town. Sundre and Bowden have their own town offices, and the country around is Mountain View or Red Deer County; we confirm the rules for your address.

Why Olds homeowners choose aluminum

An Olds roof built to be the last one. In writing.

Own crews

We put it on ourselves

Every Olds roof is installed by Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd.'s own crews. The company that quotes it is the company that installs it and stands behind the labour warranty.

Slate

The Olds favourite

Nearly every roof we have installed in Olds is the Slate profile. Cedar Shingle and Shake suit a house that had wood before; Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam are there too. Nine colours, and a 3/12 minimum slope, which we check at the visit.

Weight

Easy on an older frame

At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, the panels are a fraction of the weight of concrete tile. We still inspect the rafters and decking and write any repair into the quote.

Tear-off

Cedar comes off; asphalt may stay

Whatever cedar, concrete tile or natural slate is on the house is taken off first. A single layer of asphalt can stay only if the inspection finds it suitable. The quote says which it is for your house.

Warranties

Two warranties, written down

The Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty from Interlock Roofing covers the aluminum and its finish while the original purchaser owns the home, transferable once, workmanship excluded. Our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty covers the installation.

Canada

Made in Canada

The panels come from Interlock Roofing's plant in Delta, BC. An Alberta company, Canadian owned and operated since 1999, installs them.

Recycled

Up to 95% recycled aluminum

Straight answers

Olds roofing questions, answered plainly.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Olds?

We do. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd., the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta since 1999, installs every Olds roof with its own crews from its office in Calgary. There is no Olds office; the consultation is on Zoom or at your home. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, and a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Olds?

Usually not for the roof alone. The Town of Olds requires a building permit when work goes beyond painting, decorating, re-roofing or siding, so structural repairs can need one. Electrical, gas and plumbing permits are not issued by the Town. In Sundre, Bowden and the county the local rules apply, and we confirm them for your address.

How does a metal roof hold up to hail around Olds?

Well, but no roof is immune to hail. Insurance Bureau of Canada puts Alberta's hail damage at about $6 billion over the five years to 2025. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. The material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), so storm damage is a matter for your home insurance. Ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof.

Which communities does oldsroofing.com cover?

Olds, Sundre, Bowden, Bergen and the surrounding Mountain View County countryside. Calgary, Red Deer and the rest of Southern and Central Alberta are on calgarymetalroofing.com, run by the same company from the same Calgary office with the same warranties.

Can you roof the farm buildings too?

Yes. A barn, shop or garage can take the same profile and colour as the house. We inspect each building, price each roof separately, and plan snow guards where sliding snow would land on a door or walkway.

What does a metal roof cost in Olds?

Our cost page shows real contract prices from Interlock® roofs signed in the Calgary and Southern Alberta market in 2025 and 2026. They are a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for an accurate price. The consultation and the written quote are free.
